METHOD STATEMENT FOR SKIMCOAT APPLICATION

METHOD STATEMENT FOR SKIM COAT

1.      Introduction
2.      Option 1 - Applying procedure for Hega wall putty
3.   Option 2: Applying procedure for Apex Skim Coat
4.      Responsibilities
5.      Inspection for Construction
 6.    Safety Plan
1.0 Introduction

We Selected the following Two Suppliers for Supply Skim Coat due to excessive Q’ty of the project.
1.       Snowplow Industries (Pvt) Ltd – Hega Wall Putty
2.        Dblend Coatings (Pvt) Ltd – Apex Skim Coat

This method statement gives a step by step procedure for Applying Skim Coat for the walls.
Option 1 & Option 2 describe applying procedure for a skim coat from above two suppliers.
But we shall only use one product to complete a skim coat for one floor.

2.0 Option

1: Applying procedure for Hega wall putty

Hega Wall putty can be used on concrete, rendered wall, hollow block, precast walls, concrete ceilings, calcium silicate bricks & aerated lightweight blocks.

2.1 Surface Preparation

2.1.1 New Surface
New surface requires preparation such as removal of dust, dirt and foreign matter. In case of cracks, voids & damages it should be repaired. The surface should be in just wet condition, prior to putty application.

2.1.2 Very Smooth Surface
If the surface was made by Cement ghutai (smoothening) which normally is very smooth, bonding with putty may not become sufficiently strong. Scraping the surface with emery stone/paper is recommended before the skim coat application. The surface should be in just-wet condition, prior to putty application

2.2 Preparation of Wall Putty Paste

  • Mix Wall Putty slowly in @ 35 - 40% water by volume to prepare a paste of desired consistency.
  • Mix vigorously for 5-10 minutes for making lump-free and uniform paste.
·   Product should be mixed in such quantities that it could be used within 2 hrs of its preparation.
·    Mixing could be done manually or by a suitable method.

2.3 Application
·      Ensure that the surface is totally clean.
·      Ensure that surface is moderately rough (neither too-rough nor too-smooth).
·    Ensure that surface is just-wet. Over-wetting resulting in the accumulation of water on the surface should be avoided.
·      Apply first coat
·     Use spatula I blade I trowel on the wall with "bottom to top" Configuration
  • Apply second coat preferably after @ 12 hrs application of 1 st coat
·      Re-mix putty paste again for @ 1 minute if it is left undisturbed for @ 30 minutes.
·      Allow complete drying @ 2 days and then use fine emery paper to remove the application mark, if any or half an hour application of 2nd coat smoothening could be done with a trowel.
·     After application of second coat, wet surface twice a day for at least one day, if the season demands Water shall be applied gently.
  • Filler Coat should be apply after 3 or more days of Skim Coat of work for bonding between skim coat and paint.
·     Clean application tools

2.4 Precaution
·     Use rubber gloves while mixing.
  • Precaution should be taken to avoid dust inhalation while handling putty powder or during removal of application marks with fine emery paper say wearing nose mask.
·      Once putty paste has hardened, it shall not be used by adding water.

2.5 Storage
  • Store Hega Wall Putty in a dry place. Open the bag just before used.

3.0  Option

2: Applying procedure for Apex Skim Coat

Apex skim Coat can be applied to all types of cement plasters, ceilings, asbestos sheets, concrete, etc.

3.1 Surface Preparation
Ensure that the surface to be painted is free from any loose paint, dust or grease. All loosely adhering material of the wall and any previous grown fungus, algae or moss need to be removed by wire brush, putty blade or emery stone. Surface imperfections such as holes, dents, cracks can be filled using a mixture of cement & fine sand (in the ratio of 1:3).

 3.2 Mixing
Mix the Apex Skim Coat powder with clean water in a clean non-absorbent vessel. Add water gradually to the powder. Mix well by hand or mechanically for about five to ten minutes till a uniform paste is formed. 20kg of Apex Skim Coat requires 7 -8 liters of water. Slow speed is recommended for mixing. Make sure the mixture is lump-free.

3.3 Application
If the surface is the much drier or high-temperature condition, dampen the surface with clean water. Allow excess water to drain off, apply the mix on the surface to the desired thickness (maximum of 2mm) from bottom to upward direction with the help of a steel trowel/putty blade. After drying of the first coat, rub the surface gently with a wet sponge or putty blade in order to remove any loose particles. Apply the second coat after the first coat has fully dried and set. Level the surface with sandpaper (No. 220-320) to remove unevenness. Use sandpaper vertically.

3.4 Precautions
 During Application
-          Proper mixing is very important and hence attention to be given for proper mixing in order to get the best results.
-          Always prepare a required quantity of skim coat and use it within 1.5 hours after the mixing. If it is hard to apply, add some water. (Pot life of mixed material may vary with different environmental conditions.)
-          Do not over thin.
-          For better finish, the thickness of each coat should not exceed 2mm and total plaster thickness should not exceed 4mm.
-          Do not apply when the ambient temperature is less than 5'C or if the temperature might drop to this level within 4 hours after application.
-          Protect from a high heat for 2-4 hours after applying.
-          Always keep the partially used packs properly tied up without opening to the atmosphere.

During Usage
-          Though it non-toxic product but avoid dust inhalation, direct eye, and mouth contact and prolonged skin contact. In case of eye or mouth contact, flush with clean water at least 15 minutes and seek medical help.
-          Avoid spreading of powders when mixing and moving.
-          Being white cement added product, people with allergy of cement should take proper precautions.

 Storage
Store in a dry place. Better to use within one year after manufacturing.

5.      Inspection for Construction
All kinds of inspection for construction shall be carried out by the site Engineers along with Engineers representative and QA/ QC Engineer of SANKEN as per the standards and specifications.

However, prior information shall be given to Consultant representative at the site to proceed necessary checking’s periodically & make final comments.

Inspection shall be carried out while progressing of the work & approval shall be granted without affecting the progress of the work.

     6.    Safety Plan

Safety of the personnel and properties is to be given prime importance and all the works to be carried out without causing any accidents or property damages.
·         Adequate access and egress should be provided to the site for work
·         All workers should wear basic personnel protective equipment.
·    All the equipment, tools being used for the work should be in good working condition and maintained.
·         Adequate illumination shall be provided during night time.

·         First aid facilities and vehicles for emergency cases shall be available at the site.
