1.0 Introduction
This method statement gives a step by step procedure for Granite Tiling
of Floors and Walls.
2.1 Method of Granite Floor Tiling.
- The concrete slab surface on which the Granite are to
be laid will be cleaned, wetted & mopped prior to commence the laying
of Granite tiles.
- Granite tiles will be matched & selected according
to the approved Drawings.
- Granite shall cut using diamond blade saw.
- Before laying the Granite
tiles, guiding lines (i.e. reference lines for positioning of tiles) has
to be marked on concrete floor.
·
The final finish level less the thickness of the
granite slab will determine the level of the mortar bed. 1:3 Cement Sand mortar will be spread over the prepared
surface evenly as little more than required thickness to make bedding for Granite. The mortar will be consisting
of minimum water content which necessary to achieve workability.
·
A granite slab will be temporarily kept over the
bedding and stamped well with a Wooden / Rubber Mallet to achieve the required
finished level of the granite floor.
·
A spirit level will be used continuously to
determine the horizontal level of each slab and to carry the level from slab to
slab.
·
The temporary granite slab laid will be
carefully removed from the bedding and
stacked.
- Dry cement powder will
be evenly spread on top of the stamped bed and clean water sprayed to wet
the cement sand bed thoroughly.
- The
removed granite slab will be placed once again in the same position and
stamped with a Wooden / Rubber Mallet to achieve the final finished level
of the granite floor. If squeezed cement grout collected in the Granite
tile groove will be removed & cleaned properly.
·
The newly laid floor will be protected from foot
traffic for minimum 24 hours.
- Grouting
of joints will be done soon after. The grooves between Granite tiles then
will be finished with the approved tile grout and entire surface will be
cleaned with damped cloth before hardening any excess tile grout over the
Granite surface. This method will be repeated until the entire floor is
completed.
- Cement mortar will be spread, tamped and leveled
properly using Aluminum level bars reference to the level pegs on floor.
- Over the wet cement mortar bedding cement will be
spread just before placing the Granite tile.
- The Granite tiles will be fixed over the bedding one
after another according to the base tile lines, each tile will be gently
tamped with rubber mallet.
- Move the tile slightly in all directions to ensure the
bond. Once it is satisfied with the bond, move the Granite tile to its
final position. Repeat the process for each tile.
- Tile grout will be properly mixed with water as per
manufacturer’s instructions. The tile grouts will be spread over the
surface with a grout float (i.e. Flexible Rubber Pad). During the
application of grout, the grout float shall be held at a 45-degree angle
to the floor or wall, pushing the grout securely into the gaps. Scrape the
flat edge of the grout across the tile surfaces to remove residual grout
and entire surface shall be cleaned off with damped cloth before hardening
any excess tile grout over the Granite surface.
- Leave the floor for 2-3 days to seal the grout with
appropriate grout sealer as specified by the manufacture which shall
resistant to water, oil and stains.
- During the fixing of Granite tiles, a straight edge
(normally 100mm x 25mm Aluminum hollow bar) shall be used to check the
evenness of the tile surface and plumb bob shall be used to check the
verticality.
2.2 Method of Granite Wall Tiling
·
The structure will be thoroughly cleaned.
·
Granite tiles will be matched & selected
according to the approved Drawings.
·
The stainless steel 25mm wide strip (gauge 22)
will be slide into the slit in the granite tile with Epoxy adhesive.
·
Surface alignment will be set out using
Horizontal & Vertical strings at regular intervals. The top level of the
bottom row of Granite tiles will be established by a string.
·
The Bottom row of tiles will be placed on the
finish floor using 1 : 3 cement and sand mixture and compacted with a rubber
hammer until the required level is reached.
·
The alignment will be checked by using a spirit
level.
·
All necessary holes will be drilled into the
concrete or brick walls/columns at pre-marked position to receive anchors and
fix the strip to the concrete or brick walls/columns.
·
Approximately 12 hours after fixing of Granite
tiles, space between Granite tile & structure will be back filled with a
1:3 Cement Sand mortar.
·
The next row will be placed and preceded with
same process.
·
This procedure will be repeated until the whole
cladding is completed.
·
During the fixing of
Granite tiles, a straight edge (normally 100mm x 25mm Aluminum hollow bar)
shall be used to check the evenness of the tile surface.
