1. Introduction
This method statement will be established for the construction of brick
masonry walls and the related work which are to be completed with brick walls.
Brick masonry walls in the scope of work are 225mm thick & 112.5mm thick
brick walls. These brick walls will be built with 1:5 cement sand mixture

3. Material
3.1 Bricks
Approved type shall be used.
(a)
Approximate size of bricks.
Length 210 mm
Width 95 mm
Height 55 mm
(b)
Tolerance + 10 mm
3.2 Cement
Material
Cement :
Ordinary Portland cement (Any approved brand of cement by Engineer)
3.3 Sand (i) Natural sand free form organic matters.
(ii) The clay plus fine silt content shall not
exceed 5% by weight
and 15% by volume.
3.4 Water
Water
shall be fresh, clean and free from harmful matters and dissolved salts.
3.5 Brick mesh
4. Mortar / Concrete
4.1 Mortar
Mortar
shall be mixed in mechanical mixers or manually as required. Each batch shall
be proportioned by volume.
4.2
Proportion of Mortar
Mortar shall be two (1) parts of
Cement to Five (5) parts of sand.
4.3 Concrete
Type
C 20 for reinforcement concrete for stiffener Beams and Columns
5. Setting out
(i)
Surface of the concrete shall be thoroughly cleaned
before marking lines on the floor, wall, column, etc.
(ii)
All main grid lines shall be marked according to
approved drawings.
(iii)
1.00 m off line from the grid line and name it.
(iv)
200 mm off line from the brick face on either side of
wall.
(v)
Mark centerline of door opening.
(vi)
Mark structural opening of the door
(vii)
Mark concrete column, stud, concrete wall etc. along
the wall line.
6. Stiffener
Columns, Beams and Concrete Ledges
(i)
Stiffener
Beams/Columns shall be required to wall areas greater than 9m2 which are unsupported by brick walls, concrete
walls or columns.(Stiffener columns shall be generally placed in 3m intervals)
(ii)
Approved Flexible Sealant shall be provided at the
interface of concrete and brick flexible joints.
(iii)
Concrete Ledges shall be provided for Bathroom areas
for Water Proofing works and it will be measured separately and will be claimed
in concrete items.
7. Use of Mortar / Cleaning
7.1 Use of
Mortar
(i)
Timber trays will be used place to place mortar mix at
every working areas.
(ii) Mortar
which has commenced to set will not allowed to use or mix with any other
mortar.
(iii) Water
will be added to the mortar to achieve acceptable workability and strength.
7.2 Cleaning
(i)
Cleaning will be done daily, before ends of day work.
8. Brick wall Construction
(i) Laying pattern
shall be English bond
(ii) The bricks
shall be wetted with water before use on works. Bad quality bricks & over
burnt bricks shall not be used.
(iii) The top of
walls left off shall be wetted before the work is re-commenced.
(iv) The thickness of
mortar joint shall not exceed 10 mm.
(v) Every
third course shall be leveled.
(vi) Lay the Brick Mesh over
the 7th Brick layer and at every subsequent 14th layer
of brick wall.
(vii)
Fix the Brick Tie if the brick wall connects with the structural wall or
Column over 7th layer and at every subsequent 14th layer
of brick wall.
(viii)
Continue with brickwork by inserting brick tie and
brick mesh as mentioned above.
(ix) The walls shall
be carried up in a uniform manner no one portion being raised more than 1m
above another at any time.
(x) All constructed
masonry exposed to the sun shall be kept damp immediately after completion and
also during the following day.
(xi)
Openings for
doors, windows, etc shall be properly marked out and left unbuilt until the
frames have been fixed position.
(xii)
Anchors provided for stiffeners columns
and the perimeter brick walls
(xiii) All non-load Bearing walls shall be isolated
from the main structure by providing a 10mm clearance between the wall and the
sides and slabs over
9. Curing
Curing will be carried out 24 hours
after completion of brick masonry.
10. Inspection for Construction
All kinds of inspection for
construction shall be carried out by the site Engineers along with Engineers
representative and QA/ QC Engineer of SANKEN as per the standards and
specifications.
However, prior information shall be
given to Consultant representative at site to proceed necessary checking’s
periodically & make final comments.
The inspection shall be carried out while
progressing of the work & approval shall be granted without affecting to
the progress of the work.
